Votano Wine cultivates grapes along the Narai River in Seba, Shiojiri City, an area with a long history of fruit cultivation. Owner Mitsuhiro Tsubota relocated from Tokyo to pursue winemaking, choosing this specific site after studying geology nationwide. He favored the mineral-rich, stone-laden soils deposited by the Narai River flowing from the Jurassic strata of the Kiso-Hida mountain range—rocky terroir that provides advantageous conditions for viticulture. Since 2012, Votano has been releasing wines made from grapes grown in these unique vineyards, working to establish Seba as a distinct terroir within the broader Shiojiri wine region.
