Nestled in the embrace of Komayumidake mountain overlooking Ueda city to the east, Funky Château is dedicated to crafting wines that convey messages from nature, offer enjoyment in drinking, and provide spiritual richness. The winery began grape cultivation in 2008 on a 1.25-hectare vineyard in Ueda's Higashiyama district, later expanding to a 4.5-hectare former tourist farm site in Aoki Village with local support. Their winery was completed in 2011, with the first vintage released the following year. The vineyards, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, benefit from over 2,000 hours of annual sunshine in one of Japan's driest regions. Significant diurnal temperature variation creates ideal conditions for quality wine grape growing. Funky Château emphasizes rigorous grape selection, natural fermentation, and minimal intervention—eschewing filtration and fining—to express true terroir character. They openly disclose grape varieties, origins, and winemaking methods, distinguishing between 'négociant' wines from contracted grapes and 'domaine' wines from estate fruit.
