Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1989, Kaneda harbored childhood dreams of becoming a professional soccer player until a university injury forced him to abandon this path. While searching for his new direction in life, he discovered winemaking—a pursuit that would ultimately give him renewed purpose.
Beginning grape cultivation in Niki's Asahidai district in 2015, he was motivated by a deep sense of gratitude: 'I want to create wines that can somehow repay all those who have supported me along my journey,' Kaneda explains. His brewing facility was completed directly across from his vineyard in 2018, finally enabling him to begin the home brewing he had long anticipated.
For his inaugural vintage, he crafted his first harvest Pinot Noir completely additive-free and bottled it unfiltered. 'I was eager to discover the true potential of grapes harvested from my own vineyard for the first time, so I chose to use wild yeast and maintain a completely additive-free approach,' he recalls. The wine's reception exceeded all expectations—approximately 150 half-bottles sold out within just three days of release.
That same year, he also ventured into sparkling wine production using purchased Niagara grapes, boldly challenging himself with the traditional bottle fermentation method. Kaneda reflects that his best wine concepts emerge while working directly in the vineyard, where inspiration flows naturally. 'Looking toward the future, I hope to contribute meaningfully by welcoming retired athletes and supporting aspiring new farmers,' he shares, as his dreams continue to expand beyond winemaking alone.
