Yoshiaki "Nick" Hasumi, who moved alone to the United States in his teens and worked for a Major League Baseball team, encountered diverse alcoholic beverages during global travels before pursuing his winemaking dream. In 2005, Hasumi relocated to Tomi City seeking the perfect site for grape cultivation, clearing a neglected vineyard and planting 1,000 grapevines that thrived. Through contract winemaking, he produced his first wines in 2010 from the 2009 vintage—Chardonnay and Merlot. Leveraging Tomi City's wine special zone system, Hasumi founded what he calls "Japan's smallest winery," cultivating European varieties and indigenous Koshu grapes. The winery shop offers tastings with scenic views, and production steadily expanded until transitioning to a general manufacturing license in 2012. Incorporated as Hasumi Farm Co., Ltd. in 2013, the winery gained nationwide recognition through active social media promotion.
