Born in Yoichi in 1996, Mizuki Nakai represents the 5th generation of the Nakai Tourist Farm, a family operation that has been deeply rooted in the community for decades. After studying agricultural management at agricultural university, he joined the family business following graduation, bringing fresh perspectives to traditional farming practices.
Initially involved in grape and apple cultivation, his passion for winemaking was ignited when he began training at Domaine Takahiko from winter 2021, learning from one of the region's most respected producers. Starting to brew with his own equipment from 2023 while continuing his training, he launched his winemaking career at the family's new venture, 'Domaine Mizuki Nakai.'
Since starting farming in 2018, he has cultivated grapes, apples, and cherries, building comprehensive agricultural expertise. 'This is the first challenge for a long-established grape farming family. I think expectations around us are high, so I want to set a good precedent,' he says with determination, acknowledging the weight of family legacy while embracing innovation.
Focusing primarily on Pinot Noir, he aims for flavorful rosé wines with a unique Japanese character, stating 'Ideally pairing with Yoichi's fish dishes'—a goal that reflects his deep understanding of local cuisine and terroir. In addition to conventional farming methods, he's challenging himself with organic methods in new plots, explaining 'I want to work on soil building considering microorganisms that help fermentation,' demonstrating his scientific approach to viticulture.
Nakai Tourist Farm overlooks the Japan Sea beyond rows of fruit trees, boasting about 100 years of farming history and 40 years of wine grape cultivation, having long supplied fruit to manufacturers. The establishment of their own winery represents a significant evolution, with expectations gathering for the first winery operated by a grape farming family in town, bridging traditional agriculture with modern winemaking innovation.
